The Poppy Trust Fund is at the heart of the Royal Canadian Legion’s mission to honour and support Canada’s Veterans. Each year, donations received through the Poppy Campaign are placed in trust and used exclusively to provide direct assistance to Veterans, their families, and dependents in need.
The annual Legion poppy campaign is organized around physical branches, and as Fort York Branch 165 is a Virtual Branch, we are unable to participate in that campaign.
As an alternative, the members of Branch 165 established a private charitable Trust in 1997 for the benefit of Veterans.
This Trust is registered with the Canadian Revenue Agency, and the CRA annually publishes the Trust’s financial statements and directorships.
Members are expected to donate to the Trust and almost unanimously do so. Donations to the Trust typically total between $20,000 and $25,000 annually, with approximately $20,000 going to the Sunnybrook Veterans Comfort Fund. The Trust has also assisted veterans facing homelessness, awarded bursaries, and covered all the meal and drink expenses for our veteran guests when they attend our member events.
It has also contributed to several memorials dedicated to the service and sacrifices of our veterans.
The Royal Canadian Legion was formed in 1926 with a membership of 50,000. The Legion’s commitment to the Remembrance of those who gave their lives for peace and freedom, is as valid today as it was then. Today the Legion is one of the largest community service organizations in Canada.
